Top 5: NYC Spots to Watch Fireworks

From twinkly shimmers of cascading light to spectacular booming explosions, Independence Day fireworks are among the most beautiful sights of summer, beloved by both young and old. But, did you know that fireworks were intended to be a part of our Fourth of July celebrations even before the ink was dry on the Declaration of Independence?

In a letter to his wife, penned the night before the signing of that great document, John Adams wrote that our nation's birth should be celebrated "with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more." And thus, the first fireworks display in celebration of our independence was set off the following year on July 4, 1777.

Two-hundred-and-forty years later, you can enjoy illuminations across the New York area, including these five great light shows.

Musical performers will include Brad Paisley, Hailee Steinfeld and Lady Antebellum, and the West Point Band will accompany the fireworks show. Macy's has put together an extensive viewing guide, but if you'd prefer to watch from the comfort of your air-conditioned living room, the spectacular will be televised on NBC starting at 8 p.m.
