Top 5: NYC Dog Parks

While there isn't a particularly accurate census of dog ownership in New York City, most estimates peg the number of Big Apple canines at well over half a million. With so many paws, and so few homes with generous outdoor space, big city dog owners rely on park space in order to keep their pups exercised and socialized.

While spaces are being added and improved every year, these are our top five dog parks right now, from Jersey City to Brooklyn.

Hillside Dog Park

Hillside Dog Park—Columbia Heights & Vine, Brooklyn Heights

This triangular park nestled in quaint Brooklyn Heights receives high marks from dog owners for its generous size, gentle hills and plentiful trees — which are conveniently wrapped in benches for the humans. In warm weather months, there are hoses, water fountains and an occasional kiddie pool for the pups.

Carl Schurz Dog Runs

Carl Schurz Dog Runs—East End Avenue at 86th Street, Upper East Side

Nestled along the East River, Carl Schurz Park is a verdant oasis for Upper East Siders, especially the four-legged variety. Boasting two separate parks for small and big dogs, there's something for everyone. The large dog run includes a sandy surface, rocky outcroppings and lots of benches, while the elevated, paved small breed run puts petite pups on full display for those strolling along the East River promenade.

Hamilton Park Dog Runs

Hamilton Park Dog Runs—West Hamilton Place, Jersey City

Featuring tall wrought iron fences and lots of room for running and jumping, the small and large breed dog runs in Hamilton Park are among the best in Jersey City. There are plenty of benches, great paved and natural surfaces and the open fencing allows for great views of the surrounding historic homes.

Saint Nicholas Park Dog Runs

Saint Nicholas Park Dog Runs—St. Nicholas Terrace at 135th Street, Harlem

Uptown dogs give two paws up to the great natural terrain and tons of trees in the Saint Nicholas Park Dog Runs. There are separate, generously sized areas for small and big dogs, and semi-regular Coffee Bark events help the humans socialize too. This park offers no dedicated water source, so bring along some H2O if your pup gets easily parched.

Prospect Park

Prospect Park—Park Slope, Brooklyn

At 526 acres, Prospect Park is a wonderland for both human and canine outdoor recreation. For pups, the park's generous off-leash spaces and hours — 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. — and dedicated Dog Beach swim area make it especially delightful. And, as if that weren't enough, plans have recently been announced for an enclosed dog run at the park's southern Parade Grounds section.
