Top 5: Ways to Give Back This Holiday Season

With the holiday season approaching, it’s not only a wonderful time to celebrate with friends and family, but also an opportune moment to pause, count our blessings and embrace the spirit of goodwill toward others.

As we gather with loved ones and reflect on what we’re thankful for, let us also consider how we might help those in need. Here are a few great organizations doing especially good work, if you'd like to give back to …

1. Families in Need

Feeding America
strives to alleviate hunger by supplying meals and hunger education through an extensive network of 200 food banks nationwide, while City Harvest helps hungry New Yorkers, specifically. Through a process they dub "food rescue," City Harvest gathers and distributes surplus food from stores, restaurants, manufacturers and farms, thereby helping the hungry and reducing food waste. To assist those affected by natural disasters and weather emergencies, look to the Red Cross, which provides a safety net of emergency supplies for families with nowhere else to turn, in addition to helping ailing individuals through their crucial blood donation program.

2. The Military

Focusing on veterans who have suffered from psychological or physical harm during their service, the Wounded Warrior Project comes to the aid of servicemen and women with mental health support, wellness services and job placement assistance. Operation Gratitude offers a beacon of appreciation to service members by sending them care packages with food, supplies and letters of thanks — perfect for the holiday season. And, the National Military Family Association looks out for service families with programs like scholarships for military spouses and summer camps for military kids.

3. Children

When it comes to helping children, perhaps no name is better known than that of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and for good reason. This important organization connects kids with older role models who bring warmth and positivity, while offering guidance as the young ones face the challenges of youth and adolescence. New Yorkers for Children offers educational support, skill development and other services to young people moving through the foster care system, and Children's Aid Society offers a variety of services that benefit New York children in need, from after-school programs and health services to access to the arts.

4. Animals

Don't forget our furry friends during the holidays when harsh weather and neglect are at an all-time high. The ASCPCA works tirelessly to eradicate the cruel treatment of animals across the country, while Best Friends Animal Society aims to stop the widespread killing of pets in shelters. In the New York area, 113-year-old Bideawee has earned a sterling reputation for their extensive adoption and pet healthcare services.

5. New York City

515 Fifth Avenue at 13th Street

Interested in giving back to our wonderful city during the holidays? The Central Park Conservancy is a great place to start. As an essential steward of the beloved, 843-acre park, the Conservancy is responsible for maintaining its beauty, usability and public programs. Founded by Bette Midler in 1995, the mission of the New York Restoration Project is to ensure that all New Yorkers have enjoyable and accessible green space in their neighborhoods. To that end, the organization has been instrumental in restoring parks, planting gardens and tending to trees across the city. Speak of trees, Trees New York, was created 40 years ago to safeguard one of New York’s most precious resources. The group has trained nearly 20,000 New Yorkers in tree care and stewardship, and since 2005, TreesNY has planted more than 3,000 trees in underserved NYC communities.
