The main thoroughfare is Park Avenue, which is populated by locally owned stores, eateries and bars.
Weehawken proves the best views of New York happen in New Jersey. Picturesque parks, renowned waterfront restaurants and an award-winning school system have attracted many to the city, but the beauty of this area is what keeps them.
Weehawken has long been desirable for its close proximity to New York City. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington sent some of his men to Weehawken (Weehawk at the time) to watch over British soldiers stationed in New York. After the war, the wealthy set their sights on the “peak of the Palisades” in order to escape the industrial atmosphere of developing New York City. Around that time, the same engineer who built the Eiffel Tower came to Weehawken where he designed wagon lifts, stairs and an elevator to assist rich families in reaching the wildly popular ferry stations.
Weehawken boasts a variety of efficient routes into the city. You can travel under the Hudson via NJ transit buses or privately operated minivans (for an extremely low cost), or use a network of ferries and water taxis to travel by sea. Weehawken offers a free (yes free!) waterfront shuttle that transports residents between upper-Weehawken and the waterfront during rush hours. A variety of access points to the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail provide transport around Weehawken as well as to Hoboken, Bayonne, or Jersey City.
Hugging the waterfront and providing spectacular city views, each restaurant on “restaurant row” claims the best cuisine and the biggest windows (or patios during the summer) overlooking the Hudson. No matter what venue you choose, Weehawken’s lineup of charming coastal eateries is sure to satisfy.
Weehawken is better known for quaint and quiet tree-lined streets than bumping clubs. If you’re looking for a big night out on the town, you’re in luck—Weehawken shares a border with Hoboken, a city known for its bustling nightlife and bars.
Whether you’re looking to practice sports in a community field, take in beautiful river views of the city or laze about the park with your pooch, there’s a place for you in Weehawken.
