Hidden Hoboken: An Insider Guide

In a town known by many for its raucous bar scene, it can be daunting to find the quaint, hidden gems in the so-called Sixth Borough—those out-of-the way neighborhood spots with a locals-only vibe.

But they are there! Here we unveil “hidden Hoboken,” with an insider's look at some of the best destinations the Mile Square City has to offer.

Best Private Dinner: The Little Grocery
Two locations: 214 Jefferson Street and 1212 Washington Street
While known as the "Home of Hoboken's Best Egg Sandwiches," The Little Grocery also serves up delicious, affordable food throughout the day. Insider tip: Gather up seven of your closest friends and book a private BYOB buffet dinner. You'll have the place to yourselves and an exquisite meal, all for a surprisingly reasonable price.

Best Pizza: Dozzino
Located at 534 Adams Street
With a small space and a laidback attitude, Dozzino has managed to break through the pizza clutter to become one of the best pie joints in the state. Their artisanal wood-fired pizzas feature creative ingredients and fresh dough made daily. The specials change frequently so be sure to check their blog for updates or follow them on Twitter (twitter.com/dozzino) for daily specials. Insider tip: There's a bocce ball court out back. What could be more perfect than pizza, BYOB, and bocce?

Best Outdoor Activity: Hoboken Cove Boathouse
Located at the intersection of Frank Sinatra Drive and Maxwell Place
Did you know you can kayak on the Hudson River for the amazing price of … free? The all-volunteer-run Hoboken Cove Boathouse has been providing free kayaking for more than ten years. Visitors can choose to paddle in the small embayment area or venture out into the river on a guided trip. Insider tip: All activities are first-come, first served or by lottery, so be sure to get there early. Don't forget the sunscreen!

Best Cheap Eats: Vivi Bubble Tea
Located at 117 Washington Street
Washington Street is the latest outpost for the bubble tea craze, but the real surprise at Vivi Tea's Hoboken location is the food. Visitors are raving about the reasonably-priced menu including ramen and dumplings. Insider tip: The popcorn chicken is an addiction waiting to happen. You've been warned.

Best Neighborhood Spot: Anthony David's
Located at 953 Bloomfield Street
Locals are fanatical about this all-day brunch spot, which has developed into a sit-down restaurant over time, having originally opened as a corner store in Hoboken over 15 years ago. Chef Anthony Pino focuses on delivering Italian classics while incorporating local ingredients and simple presentation into every meal. Insider tip: The bourbon-glazed doughnuts are a dessert not to be missed.

Best Sandwiches: Luca Brasi's Deli
Located at 100 Park Avenue
You're not a Hoboken local if you haven't picked your contender in the Italian deli wars. Fiore, Lisa's, Vito's—the competition is fierce. Our favorite is Luca Brasi's. Named for the infamous enforcer from "The Godfather" ("Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes!"), this corner deli offers a no-nonsense interior, enormous sandwiches, and most importantly, fantastic mozzarella. Insider tip: Seriously, don't forget the "mutz."
